Author Spotlight with Jessica Mathisen

We are pleased to spotlight author Jessica Mathisen this month. Her picture book, "No Matter Where I Go," has been a popular pick from our Amazon Wishlist among book donors. It was also the first book donation that Foster Book Club received when we launched in October! So it's only fitting that we ask to feature her in an author spotlight.

Here is a Foster Book Club Q&A with Jessica Mathisen:

What made you decide to write a book about a non-traditional family structure?

Foster care completely changed our lives. While we were fostering, it was hard to find books that helped children in care to realize they were not alone. I wanted to write a book that could help children in care find hope in a seemingly hopeless situation.

What is your favorite snack to eat or drink while you write? Or while you watch a fun movie?

I like to say that popcorn is a core value in our home. :) I LOVE popcorn with a LOT of salt. I also love to drink tea. I am not a coffee gal at all, and a good chai tea latte or London fog is my go-to beverage of choice while writing, reading, watching a movie, catching up with a friend, etc.

What was a book (or books) that you liked to read as a child?

I loved reading The Babysitter's Club series, Nancy Drew mysteries, and the American Girl series. I have loved historical fiction since I was a little girl!

What are some recent children’s books that you have read and really enjoyed?

Jesus Loves You More by Hunter Beless and Your Worth Never Wavers by Laura Wifler are two picture books I love. I have also been reading The Boxcar Children with my kids as a part of our homeschool and we all love it!

Why is it important for kids to have access to books that resonate or represent them?

Kids need to see themselves represented in books to know they matter and they are not alone. I think that kids in care can feel especially forlorn and forsaken, but nothing could be further from the truth. God loves them and has a plan for them, too.
